So I was wardriving down Kingston today, and my battery was getting low.

So I decided to stop by Best Buy and get a power inverter, so I wouldn’t have to stop. Cost me $71. I got in my car, plugged it in the cigarette lighter, plugged in Tera. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. It wouldn’t stop. It was a very annoying high pitched beep. Plus it wasn’t working. So I drove to campus and got online and looked up what this meant. It meant that Tera is too much of a power hog for that inverter. So I ordered one online for $40. Return the other one. So I saved $30 for a better inverter, but of course, now I have to wait for it to ship.

Soo…here’s what I’ve gotten so far…

These are of Knoxville/Alcoa and then campus, respectively. Click on the thumbnail to see the larger picture.

I’ve only been out like two or three times, so I don’t have a whole lot yet.

The rest of my life is crappy. Don’t ask.

Argh. I’m sooo mad.

I’d been waiting all day for this eBay auction to come to an end so I could snipe myself an originial Orinoco gold card, and then I lost it.

Basically, what happened was, I found this auction for an Orinoco silver card but the card pictured was gold. So I emailed the seller and confirmed that it was, in fact, gold. He just thought it was silver because the card itself was silver. So I thought, oh goody, no one else has probably noticed this, so I should be able to get this fairly cheap (Orinoco golds go for about $60-$70 on eBay). Anyway, I’m sitting at Mellow Mushroom, and it’s about two minutes till the end of the auction. I refresh the page one more time before I bid, just to see if anyone else had been waiting till the last minute, and THEN……my crappy Proxim card figures out that it’s about to be replaced and decides not to work! By the time the page refreshed, the auction was over!! The card went for $37!!! *cries* That is like the deal of the century. I’m very mad at my crappy Proxim card right now. Things like this is WHY I WANT TO GET RID OF IT TO BEGIN WITH!! *sigh* Now I must spend several more weeks trying to find a good deal on an Orinoco, while my antenna sits and waits for a card it can actually connect to. And this means I must spend more time in Windows (blah), since I can’t go wardriving in Linux with this card. :-P

I got an unexpected email today.

Powernotebooks rebated me $30, since they lowered the price of their 4760. I bought Tera like a month ago! Such a great company. I highly recommend them to everyone. :-D

I got my coffee table today. Finally picked it up. It’s too tall for my couch. I need a new couch now.

I think I did decently well on my Math 300 test today. Which is good, considering I never got around to studying.

Now if I could only find some time to work on my comp sci lab…

Here’s a few pics of Jewel at the Atlanta concert that I found online.

These were taken by Robb D. Cohen.

Back from the Jewel concert!!

It was great!

Okay, well, since this show wasn’t really supposed to happen, Jewel didn’t have a set list. So the first thing she did was ask the audience what they wanted to hear, and she played from suggestions. I can’t remember the exact order of the songs, so here is a list organized by album. I might have forgotten a few, but this is basically it:
Pieces of You: “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “Foolish Games,” “Near You Always,” “Morning Song,” “I’m Sensitive,” “You Were Meant For Me”
Spirit: “Hands,” “Enter from the East,” “Life Uncommon”
This Way: “Standing Still,” “The New Wild West,” “Grey Matter”
0304: “Intuition,” “2 Become 1″
Other: “Passing Time,” “Cold Song,” “Race Car Driver,” “Chime Bells”
She also sang a song acappella in another language, maybe Italian? It was opera-ish.

The best part of any Jewel concert is her narrative. She told us how she came to write “Race Car Driver.” When she was 18, she said her car broke down on the highway and so she decided to hitchhike her way to a gas station to call a tow truck. So this guy stops, and he’s driving this hot rod (complete with fuzzy dice and a racing stripe). She gets in, and he takes her to the gas station. Then he offers to drive her back to her car. So she said, he was just casually talking about California and the he asked, “So can I see your boobs?” Jewel said she was freaking out and that she didn’t know whether to try to jump out of the car or charge him. Hehee.. So she said she was sitting there with this frightened look on her face and he was like, “What?” He finally just took her back to her car and left. Of course, I can’t tell the story as well as she can. :)

She also gave her spiel about “Cold Song” being her most profound and intelligent song ever. Hehee…I’d heard that story before though.

The highlight of the evening was when she started to sing “I’m Sensitive.” Now, it just wouldn’t be a Jewel concert if she didn’t forget the words to at least one song. ;) And this was it. She started to sing it, but then couldn’t remember, so she made a girl from the audience come on stage to sing it with her. The girl was freaking out to begin with, and couldn’t remember the words either! So Jewel went and got her book of lyrics and looked it up and they sang it together. Jewel sang “You Were Meant for Me” next and almost forgot the words to it too.

When she sang “Who Will Save Your Soul,” she dedicated it to her bass player, and she almost started crying. :(

She sang “Chime Bells,” so I got to hear her yodel. :-D

She had to bring out someone to play “Intution” on guitar, because she said she didn’t know how to play it yet. It was the first time she had ever tried to do it acoustically, and I thought it sounded great. She made fun of her own dancing in her video, which was really funny.

Umm…I can’t really think of anything else to say about it right now, but I will post later if I remember something!

I’ll start my post today with one of my favorite comics. :)

Foxtrot 9-14-03

I’ve got a medieval studies test on Friday and I have ten pages to write before then. Must stop waiting till the last minute! Must stop blogging about my homework instead of doing it. :)

I think I’ve given up on Friendster. There are only six people in my network and I know them all. Must find a new way to make friends. Without having to actually talk to people first. :) Any ideas?

On a happier note, the Computer Stupidities site at Rinkworks is being updated again. So click the link over there —> and laugh. :-D

Overslept this morning, so I looked dead all day.

Got my brakes fixed. Cost me too much, of course. Guy kinda creeped me out too. Blah.

Umm…I don’t really think I have any interesting news. Got my wireless card working in Linux. I still need longer cables, so I can get my router off the floor and maybe get some decent reception in this apartment.

Install-fest was Saturday. Went well. Lots of people showed up.

Oh, I did get that seg fault figured out (in case anyone was wondering). Got my lab all finished last Friday. Unusual for me.

Not looking forward to the drive on Saturday, but definitely looking forward to the show.

Gonna stop now and sleep. Cause I like sleep.

Well…

I’m taking a break from going out of my mind trying to figure out a very obscure seg fault…

Some bittersweet news regarding the Jewel concert: Apparently, Jewel’s bass player (”T-Bone” Hannon) had a stroke and died last Thursday. So the majority of her tour dates have been cancelled. She will, however, continue to do the Atlanta concert (along with about four others) as an acoustic show, rather than with her band. Now, just Jewel and her guitar is my favorite Jewel there is, so there’s definitely no problem with that in my opinion. It is just sad that it has to be under these circumstances.

My coffee table finally came in, so I have to go pick that up in the morning. I suppose I should actually clean the living room so I’ll have a place to put it. Heh.

I need some longer ethernet cables.

I’ll be in Atlanta a week from Saturday! :-D

I bought a ticket to the Jewel concert off of ebay last night. Very exciting. I finally get to see my favorite singer live (besides the like five songs I saw her sing at Lilith Fair in 1997). So, yeah, I’m excited. :-D

Oh, and by the way, do not buy the Linksys wireless broadband router (802.11b).

It sucks. I’m on #2 and exchanging it for a Netgear or something tomorrow.

Tera has gone wireless!

After struggling with my annoying Linksys router for an hour or so, I finally got her online with her new wireless card. :) At least, in Windows. It still isn’t working right in Linux. *sighs*

Anyway, the KLUG InstallFest is Saturday, so if you’re reading this and you don’t have Linux on your computer, you should come.

Umm…

I should be working on my lab. It’s due tomorrow. Blah.

Okay, as promised (an hour ago)…

And sorry about my hair in both of the webcam pics. I seriously need to find time to style it. Hey, perhaps I should do that instead of taking random screenshots.

Windows (ignore how tired I look in the webcam shot):
Windows desktop Windows webcam shot

Linux (don’t you love my matching splash screen?):

Random shot of me taken by my webcam (don’t laugh…it’s dorky):

Well, I’ve gotten pretty much everything set up the way I like it now.

Sound is working. DVD player works. Webcam works. Just gotta get a wireless card.

I will take some screenshots later of my desktops. I still need to find a digital cam to get some pics of her. :)

Hello all.

Tera is doing good. Her only problem right now is that sound doesn’t work in Linux.

I found out my court date is in early October. So I have until then to figure out whether I’m just going to pay this silly ticket or actually try to fight it.

The Jewel concert is on the 20th. I’m trying to get some tickets on Ebay, but I don’t know how that will work out. I suspect I will miss her yet again. Plus driving 3 hours to Atlanta and 3 hours back in the same night isn’t very appealing. I hate to drive as it is.

Tera doesn’t have a wireless card yet. UT is out of the Orinico they sell, which is what I was going to get. So I’m not sure what to do about that.

Grrrr….

I don’t think it’s going to make it a few more days. After watching it freeze, hearing it make clicking noises, and seeing my hard drive appear all jumbly, I really don’t think so. Especially since I had to disable my hard drives JUST to boot to Knoppix today. All I wanted to do was work on my CS360 lab that’s due tomorrow. Wednesday can’t come soon enough for me.

Ooh…and as a good news update…

I just checked Tera’s tracking and she’s due on Wednesday now!! She left Dallas/Ft. Worth at 7:00 this evening. :-D My desktop just has to make it a few more days…

What would I do with out my Knoppix cd?

The electricity went out while I was at work today. I know because when I got home, my computer had that annoying “Invalid boot disk” error that meant it wasn’t seeing my hard drives again. Which happens every time the electricity goes out. So I’ve been struggling with it all night, and it finally sees them and I’m able to boot up Red Hat. That’s great, until I lose my internet connection and my router starts to appear like it’s not going to work. So I reboot just to see if that will do anything, and wouldn’t you know it? No hard drives. So I boot back to Knoppix, my connection is back up. And here I am. Stupid computer.
