Back from the Jewel concert!!
It was great!
Okay, well, since this show wasn’t really supposed to happen, Jewel didn’t have a set list. So the first thing she did was ask the audience what they wanted to hear, and she played from suggestions. I can’t remember the exact order of the songs, so here is a list organized by album. I might have forgotten a few, but this is basically it:
Pieces of You: “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “Foolish Games,” “Near You Always,” “Morning Song,” “I’m Sensitive,” “You Were Meant For Me”
Spirit: “Hands,” “Enter from the East,” “Life Uncommon”
This Way: “Standing Still,” “The New Wild West,” “Grey Matter”
0304: “Intuition,” “2 Become 1″
Other: “Passing Time,” “Cold Song,” “Race Car Driver,” “Chime Bells”
She also sang a song acappella in another language, maybe Italian? It was opera-ish.
The best part of any Jewel concert is her narrative. She told us how she came to write “Race Car Driver.” When she was 18, she said her car broke down on the highway and so she decided to hitchhike her way to a gas station to call a tow truck. So this guy stops, and he’s driving this hot rod (complete with fuzzy dice and a racing stripe). She gets in, and he takes her to the gas station. Then he offers to drive her back to her car. So she said, he was just casually talking about California and the he asked, “So can I see your boobs?” Jewel said she was freaking out and that she didn’t know whether to try to jump out of the car or charge him. Hehee.. So she said she was sitting there with this frightened look on her face and he was like, “What?” He finally just took her back to her car and left. Of course, I can’t tell the story as well as she can.
She also gave her spiel about “Cold Song” being her most profound and intelligent song ever. Hehee…I’d heard that story before though.
The highlight of the evening was when she started to sing “I’m Sensitive.” Now, it just wouldn’t be a Jewel concert if she didn’t forget the words to at least one song.
And this was it. She started to sing it, but then couldn’t remember, so she made a girl from the audience come on stage to sing it with her. The girl was freaking out to begin with, and couldn’t remember the words either! So Jewel went and got her book of lyrics and looked it up and they sang it together. Jewel sang “You Were Meant for Me” next and almost forgot the words to it too.
When she sang “Who Will Save Your Soul,” she dedicated it to her bass player, and she almost started crying.
She sang “Chime Bells,” so I got to hear her yodel.
She had to bring out someone to play “Intution” on guitar, because she said she didn’t know how to play it yet. It was the first time she had ever tried to do it acoustically, and I thought it sounded great. She made fun of her own dancing in her video, which was really funny.
Umm…I can’t really think of anything else to say about it right now, but I will post later if I remember something!
